I was up to chapter 4 in Mere Christianity, but realized I couldn't articulate it still. So, like Dr. Cabot in Stepping Heavenward told Katherine, I am reading it over until it soaks in.
So, Chapter one is a very thorough explanation of how we all know there is a right and wrong. But it is well summarized in the last paragraph which I will quote,
These two points I wanted to make. First, that human beings, all over the earth, have this curious idea that they ought to behave in a certain way, and cannot really get rid of it. Secondly, that they do not in fact behave in that way. They know the Law of Nature; they break it. These two facts are the foundation of all clear thinking about ourselves and the universe we live in.
And to the second point, he stated earlier in the chapter:
I am only trying to call attention to a
fact; the fact that this year, or this month, or, more likely, this
very day, we have failed to practice ourselves the kind of
behaviour we expect from other people.
fact; the fact that this year, or this month, or, more likely, this
very day, we have failed to practice ourselves the kind of
behaviour we expect from other people.
Part of the proof of this, Lewis says, is in the fact that we make excuses for why is was okay for us to do this or that THIS time or under THESE circumstances.
