Stepping Heavenward

Another book I read recently that is still doing its work in my life is Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth Prentiss. Written in 1831, the story starts in the life of a young girl being raised in a Christian home who is typical of us all in her self-centered nature and spiritual immaturity. It is written in diary form, so the readers watches year after year as she faces the death of her father and other common life trials and expresses the raw truth of how we all often think and feel inside, but often never admit. In my copy from Lamplighter Publishing Mark Hamby notes that many women told him they struggled about middle way through the book as it became slower, but he also notes that the women who read the whole book say that the second half is the best and I whole heartedly agree. This is a book that I will have to read over and over again to let it all soak in!
